wiki:FreifunkOnSet

I use the following stuff for setting up an open and mobile freifunk.net WLAN on Film-Sets:

The UMTS-Uplink:

Linksys WRT54G3G Router for hooking up to UMTS/GPRS with a Novatel Wireless Merlin U630 PCcard (mostly used with an external display-snap-on antenna, which fits perfect in one of the pencompartments of my backpack). I got a UMTS/GPRS Flatrate covering Germany.

The WLAN-Mesh:

Sometimes I use one or two other routers, e.g. Linksys WRT54GL, Buffalo WHRG54S or Asus Premium WL-500G, to set up a mesh-network with OLSR routing in order to distribute the signal and cover a maximum range. For the nodes I use the firmware from the leipzig.freifunk.net community, which is based on openWRT. I connect the WAN-port of one the Routers (the one which will be the gateway-node and is capable of some “special-features”: e.g. an OpenVPN Tunnel for the default route thru the UMTS-network, which is heavily NATted by the provider and uses private IP-adresses) to one of the LAN-ports of the LinksysWRT54G3G.

I also use an Asus Premium router with a UMTS USB dongle. Here is a good how-to. Works great with OpenWRT Kamikaze.

In my pocket I carry a Nokia N770 – a linuxbased handheld internet-tablet with maemo.org OS, bluetooth and WLAN. The 770 allows me to join wireless networks in Infrastructure Mode and Ad-Hoc (mesh) Mode even with OLSR running. High Hack-Value!

How to surf via kinolux.freifunk.net with a wireless device:

MacOSX – Activate Airport → join the open computer-to-computer network kinolux.freifunk.net and get an IP via DHCP.

Linux – Should be no problem, if you use the parameters below.

  • WLAN mode: adhoc
  • Channel: 1 (might change, do scan before)
  • SSID: kinolux.freifunk.net
  • BSSID: 02:ca:ff:ee:ba:be
  • IP via DHCP

WinXP – Try to join the open network kinolux.freifunk.net . Sometimes messy WLAN Drivers cannot join Ad-Hoc with DHCP. Try renewing your IP. Which wireless driver are you using?

WinVista – Try to join the open network kinolux.freifunk.net . Sometimes messy WLAN drivers cannot join Ad-Hoc with DHCP. Try renewing your IP. Which wireless driver are you using? Because of a incompatibility in Vista the usual DHCP may not be. See here for further details.

WindowsMobile etc – Try to join. Because of fucked up drivers in those devices sometimes it does not work, sometimes it does.
